Explanation
The One who knows the details of each and every thing. The One who possesses all quantitative knowledge. The One who comprehends everything, small or great, inner or outer. The One who registers and records every thought and deed.
Quran
That he may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number. (72:28)
But all things We have enumerated in writing.(78:29)
He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting. (19:94)
Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register. (36:12)

Quran
لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدًا
وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا
لَّقَدْ أَحْصَاهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَآثَارَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ فِي إِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ
يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعًا فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا ۚ أَحْصَاهُ اللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allah had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and Allah is, over all things, Witness. (58:6)
وَوُضِعَ الْكِتَابُ فَتَرَى الْمُجْرِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا فِيهِ وَيَقُولُونَ يَا وَيْلَتَنَا مَالِ هَٰذَا الْكِتَابِ لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً إِلَّا أَحْصَاهَا ۚ
And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, "Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?" (18:49)
Hadith
1. In the Sariya of `Asim bin Thabit al-Ansari (رضي الله عنه), the pagans captured Khubaib (رضي الله عنه) and took him out of the Haram of Makkah to kill him outside its boundaries. Khubaib (رضي الله عنه) requested them to let him offer two Rak'ah of voluntary prayer. They allowed him and he offered two Rak'ah prayer. Then he said: "Had I not apprehended that you would think that I was afraid of death, I would have prolonged the prayer. (Then he supplicated)
اللهم أحصهم عددًا، واقتلهم بددًا، ولا تُبقِ منهم أحدًا
O Allah! Count their number; slay them one by one and spare not one of them."
It was Khubaib (رضي الله عنه) who set the tradition for any Muslim sentenced to death in captivity to offer two Rak'ah of voluntary prayer.
2. Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated the the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:
إِنَّ لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ اسْمًا مِائَةً غَيْرَ وَاحِدٍ مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
“Indeed Allah has ninety-nine Names, one hundred less one, whoever counts them shall enter Paradise.”
3. Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that: Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:
مَنْ صَلَّى بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ لَمْ يَتَكَلَّمْ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُنَّ بِسُوءٍ عُدِلْنَ لَهُ بِعِبَادَةِ ثِنْتَىْ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً
"Whoever prays six Rak'ah after Al-Maghrib, and he does not speak about anything between them, then they will be counted for him as twelve years of worship."
4. Abu Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) reported Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying:
إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمَ إِذَا أَنْفَقَ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ نَفَقَةً وَهُوَ يَحْتَسِبُهَا كَانَتْ لَهُ صَدَقَةً
When a Muslim spends on his family seeking reward for it from Allah, it counts for him as Sadaqa.
5. Humaidah bint Yasir narrated from her grandmother Yusairah (رضی الله عنهما)- and she was one of those who emigrated - she said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to us:
عَلَيْكُنَّ بِالتَّسْبِيحِ وَالتَّهْلِيلِ وَالتَّقْدِيسِ وَاعْقِدْنَ بِالأَنَامِلِ فَإِنَّهُنَّ مَسْئُولاَتٌ مُسْتَنْطَقَاتٌ وَلاَ تَغْفُلْنَ فَتَنْسَيْنَ الرَّحْمَةَ
‘Hold fast to At-Tasbih, At-Tahlil, and At-Taqdis, and count them upon the fingertips, for indeed they shall be questioned, and they will be made to speak. And do not become heedless, so that you forget about the Mercy (of Allah)’.”
✅ Note ◉ Tasbih is saying سبحان الله (Glory be to Allah). ◉ Tahlil is saying: لا إله إلا الله (There is no god but Allah). ◉ Taqdis is saying: سبحان الملك القدوس (Glory be to the King, the Holy) or سبوح قدوس رب الملائكة و الروح (Glorious, Holy, Lord of the angels and the Spirit.) |
6. Hafsah bint Sirin narrated from Ar-Rabab, from her uncle Salman bin Amir (رضی الله عنهم) that he related: the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: "When one of you breaks his fast, then let him do so with dried dates, for they are blessed. Whoever does not find dates, then water, for it is purifying." And he said:
الصَّدَقَةُ عَلَى الْمِسْكِينِ صَدَقَةٌ وَهِيَ عَلَى ذِي الرَّحِمِ ثِنْتَانِ صَدَقَةٌ وَصِلَةٌ
"Charity given to the needy is (counted as) charity, and if it is given to relatives it is (counted as) two: charity and nurturing (the ties of kinship)."
7. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:
مَنِ احْتَبَسَ فَرَسًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ إِيمَانًا بِاللَّهِ وَتَصْدِيقًا لِوَعْدِ اللَّهِ كَانَ شِبَعُهُ وَرِيُّهُ وَبَوْلُهُ وَرَوْثُهُ حَسَنَاتٍ فِي مِيزَانِهِ
"Whoever keeps a horse for the cause of Allah (Jihad) out of faith in Allah and believing the promise of Allah, its feed, water, urine and dung will all count as Hasanat in the balance of his deeds."
8. Narrated Thabit ibn Wadi'ah (رضي الله عنه):
كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي جَيْشٍ فَأَصَبْنَا ضِبَابًا - قَالَ - فَشَوَيْتُ مِنْهَا ضَبًّا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَوَضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ - قَالَ - فَأَخَذَ عُودًا فَعَدَّ بِهِ أَصَابِعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ " إِنَّ أُمَّةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الأَرْضِ وَإِنِّي لاَ أَدْرِي أَىُّ الدَّوَابِّ هِيَ " . قَالَ فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ وَلَمْ يَنْهَ .
We were in an army with the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). We got some lizards. I roasted one lizard and brought it to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and placed it before him. He took a stick and counted its fingers. He then said: A group from the children of Israel was transformed into an animal of the land, and I do not know which animal it was. He did not eat it nor did he forbid (its eating).
9. Umm Habibah (رضي الله عنها), the wife of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), narrated from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) who said:
كُلُّ كَلاَمِ ابْنِ آدَمَ عَلَيْهِ لاَ لَهُ إِلاَّ أَمْرٌ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ نَهْىٌ عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ أَوْ ذِكْرُ اللَّهِ
"The son of Adam's speech is against him not for him, except for commanding good, or forbidding evil, or remembrance of Allah."
10. It was narrated from Asma' bint Abi Bakr (رضي الله عنها) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to her:
لاَ تُحْصِي فَيُحْصِيَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْكِ
"Do not count what you give, otherwise Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, will count what He gives to you."
11. It was narrated that Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunaif (رضي الله عنه) said: "One day we were sitting in the Masjid with a group of the Muhajirin and Ansar, We sent a man to 'Aishah (رضي الله عنها) to ask permission to come to her. She said:
'A beggar came in to me one day when the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was present, and I ordered that he be given something, then I called for it and looked at it. The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: Do you want that nothing should enter or leave your house without your knowledge? I said: 'Yes.' He said:
مَهْلاً يَا عَائِشَةُ لاَ تُحْصِي فَيُحْصِيَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْكِ
"Don't be hasty, O 'Aishah. Do not count what you give, otherwise Allah will count what He gives to you."'
12. Umm Kulthum bint ‘Uqbah (رضي الله عنها) said: I did not hear the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) making a concession for anything people say falsely except in three matters. The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) would say:
لاَ أَعُدُّهُ كَاذِبًا الرَّجُلُ يُصْلِحُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ يَقُولُ الْقَوْلَ وَلاَ يُرِيدُ بِهِ إِلاَّ الإِصْلاَحَ وَالرَّجُلُ يَقُولُ فِي الْحَرْبِ وَالرَّجُلُ يُحَدِّثُ امْرَأَتَهُ وَالْمَرْأَةُ تُحَدِّثُ زَوْجَهَا
I do not count as a liar a man who puts things right between people, saying a word by which he intends only putting things right, and a man who says something in war, and a man who says something to his wife, or a wife who says something to her husband.
13. Anas (رضي الله عنه) said:
لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فِي الْخَمْرِ عَشَرَةً عَاصِرَهَا وَمُعْتَصِرَهَا وَالْمَعْصُورَةَ لَهُ وَحَامِلَهَا وَالْمَحْمُولَةَ لَهُ وَبَائِعَهَا وَالْمُبْتَاعَةَ لَهُ وَسَاقِيَهَا وَالْمُسْتَقَاةَ لَهُ " . حَتَّى عَدَّ عَشَرَةً مِنْ هَذَا الضَّرْبِ
“The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) cursed ten with regard to wine: The one who squeezes (the grapes etc.), the one who asks for it to be squeezed, the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one for whom it is brought, the one who pours it, the one for whom it is poured, until he counted ten like this.”
14. Sayyiduna Anas (رضي الله عنه) reports that Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) passed by a Bedouin while he was supplicating in his salah saying:
يا من لا تراه العيون، ولا تخالطه الظنون، ولا يصفه الواصفون، ولا تغيره الحوادث، ولا يخشى الدوائر، يعلم مثاقيل الجبال، ومكاييل البحار، وعدد قطر الأمطار، وعدد ورق الأشجار، وعدد ما أظلم عليه الليل وأشرق عليه النهار، ولا تواري منه سماء سماء، ولا أرض أرضاً، ولا بحر ما في قعره، ولا جبل ما في وعره، اجعل خير عمري آخره، وخير عملي خواتيمه، وخير أيامي يوم ألقاك فيه
“O You whom no eyes have seen, no mind can comprehend, no describer can depict, and no effect can change, He who fears not from the change of events. He knows the weight of the mountains, the measure of the oceans, the count of rain drops, the number of leaves on the trees, the amount of things which are concealed by night, and those things upon which the sun shines. Nothing is concealed from Him; not the Heavens, nor the Earth, nor the seas and their deep corners, nor the mountains and their pathless terrain; [I ask] that You make the end of my the best part, my last deeds the best ones and that You make the best of days the day in which I meet You.”
Thereafter Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) sent someone to fetch him saying “ When he finishes praying bring him to me.” When he finished praying, he brought him. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) had been given some gold as a gift, so when the Bedouin came he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) gave it to him. The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said “O Bedouin, Where are you from?” He replied “From Bani ‘Amir bin Sasa’ah, O Messenger of Allah”. He (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said “Do you know why I gave you this gold?” He said: “because of the lineage between us O Messenger of Allah”. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Lineage has its rights but I gave you this gold because of your wonderful praising of Allah”.
15. Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying:
لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةٌ وَتِسْعُونَ اسْمًا مَنْ حَفِظَهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوِتْرَ
There are ninety-nine names of Allah; he who commits them to memory would get into Paradise. Verily, Allah is Odd (He is one, and it is an odd number) and He loves odd number.
16. It was narrated from ‘Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to say at the end of Witr:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سُخْطِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لاَ أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ
“O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot enumerate Your praise, You are as You have praised Yourself.”
17. Mu'adh bin Jabal (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,
مَا عَمِلَ الْعَبْدُ عَمَلًا أَنْجَى لَهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
“A man does nothing more calculated to rescue him from Allah’s punishment than making mention of Allah.”
