5. Hadith

5.1 Narrated Muawiya (رضي الله عنه): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said,

"If Allah wants to do good for somebody, he makes him comprehend the Religion (i.e. Islam), and Allah is the Giver and I am Al-Qasim (i.e. the distributor), and this (Muslim) nation will remain victorious over their opponents, till Allah's Order comes and they will still be victorious "

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3116)

5.2 Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (رضي الله عنه) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say at the conclusion of prayer:

There is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him, His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent.
O Allah! None can deny that which You bestow and none can bestow that which You hold back; and the greatness of the great will be of no avail to them against You.

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 16, Hadith 9)

5.3 It was narrated from 'Ata bin Abi Marwan, from his father, that: Ka'b swore to him: "By Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) Who parted the sea for Musa, we find in the Tawrah that when Dawud, the Prophet of Allah, finished his prayer, he would say:

'O Allah, set straight my religious commitment that You have made a protection for me, and set straight my worldly affairs which You have made a means of my livelihood. O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. None can withhold what you have given and none can give what you have withheld, and no wealth or fortune can avail the man of wealth and fortune before You.' "

He said: "And Ka'b told me that Suhaib told him that Muhammad (ﷺ) used to say (these words) when he had finished praying."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1346)

5.4 It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed (رضي الله عنه) that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say (after Ruku'):

"Allah hears the one who praises Him; Our Lord, to You be the Praise, filling the heavens, filling the Earth, and filling whatever else You will, Lord of Glory and Majesty, the truest thing a slave had said, and we are all slaves to You. None can withhold what You grant, nor can the possession of an owner benefit him before You."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1068)

5.5 Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to say (after Ruku'):

"O Allah, our Rabb (Lord), to You is praise in all the heavens and all the earth, and all that You Will (to create) afterwards, O You, Who are worthy of praise and glory, the most worthy of what a slave says - and we are all Your slaves: no one can withhold what You give, or give what You withhold, and riches cannot avail a wealthy person against You."

(Bulugh al-Maram Book 2, Hadith 182)

5.6 Rifa'a az-Zurqi (رضي الله عنه) said, "In the Battle of Uhud when the idolaters retreated, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, 'Form straight ranks so that I can praise my Almighty Lord.' They formed in ranks behind him. He said,

'O Allah, all praise is due to You. O Allah, none can contract what You expand nor bring near what you put far away. None can put far away what You bring near. None can give what You withhold nor withhold what You give. O Allah, expand to us some of Your blessings, mercy and favour and give us provision! O Allah, I ask You for the abiding blessing which is neither changed nor removed. O Allah, I ask You for blessing on the Day of Utter Poverty and security on the Day of Fear. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what You give us. O Allah, make us love belief and adorn our hearts with it. Make us hate disbelief, deviance and rebellion. Place us among the rightly-guided. O Allah, make us die Muslims and make us live as Muslims and join us to the rightly, acting, who are neither disappointed nor afflicted. O Allah, fight the unbelievers who bar your path and who deny Your Messengers. Place You abasement and punishment over them. O Allah, fight the unbelievers who were given the Book, O Lord of Truth!'"

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad Book 1, Hadith 96)

5.7  Hakam reported: There dominated in Kufa a man whose name was mentioned as Zaman b. al-Ash'ath, who ordered Abu 'Ubaidah b. 'Abdullah to lead people in prayer and he accordingly used to lead them. Whenever he raised his head after bowing, he stood up equal to the time that I can recite (this supplication):

O Allah! our Lord! unto Thee be the praise which would fill the heavens and the earth, and that which will please Thee besides them I Worthy art Thou of all praise and glory. None can prevent that which Thou bestowest, and none can bestow that whichthou preventest. And the greatness of the great will not avail him against Thee.

Hakam (the narrator) said: I made a mention of that to Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Laila who reported: I heard al-Bara' b. 'Azib say that the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his bowing, and when he lifted his head from bowing, and his prostration, and between the two prostrations (all these acts) were nearly proportionate. I made a mention of that to 'Ar b. Murrah and he said: I saw Ibn Abi Laili (saying the prayer), but his prayer was not like this.

(Sahih Muslim 471 b)

5.8 Narrated Malik ibn Nadlah (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Hands are of three types:

Allah's hand is the upper one; the bestower's hand is the one near it; the beggar's hand is the lower one. So bestow what is surplus, and do not submit yourself to the demand of your soul.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 1649

5.9 It was narrated that Tariq Al-Muharibi (رضي الله عنه) said: "We came to Al-Madinah and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was standing on the Minbar addressing the people and saying:

'The hand which gives is the upper hand. Start with those for whom you are responsible; your mother, your father, your sister, your brother, then the next closest, and the next closet'."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 2532)

5.10 Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said: “One night, when he (ﷺ) exited his Salat, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying:

‘O Allah, I ask You of Your mercy, that You guide by it my heart, and gather by it my affair, and bring together that which has been scattered of my affairs, and correct with it that which is hidden from me, and raise by it that which is apparent from me, and purify by it my actions, and inspire me by it with that which contains my guidance, and protect me by it from that which I seek protection, and protect me by it from every evil. O Allah give me faith and certainty after which there is no disbelief, and mercy, by which I may attain the high level of Your generosity in the world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for success [in that which You grant, and relief] in the Judgment, and the positions of the martyrs, and the provision of the successful, and aid against the enemies. O Allah, I leave to You my need, and my actions are weak, I am in need of Your mercy, so I ask You, O Decider of the affairs, and O Healer of the chests, as You separate me from the punishment of the blazing flame, and from seeking destruction, and from the trial of the graves. O Allah, whatever my opinion has fallen short of, and my intention has not reached it, and my request has not encompassed it, of good that You have promised to anyone from Your creation, or any good You are going to give to any of Your slaves, then indeed, I seek it from You and I ask You for it, by Your mercy, O Lord of the Worlds. O Allah, Possessor of the strong rope, and the guided affair, I ask You for security on the Day of the Threat, and Paradise on the Day of Immortality along with the witnesses, brought-close, who bow and prostrate, who fulfill the covenants, You are Merciful, Loving, and indeed, You do what You wish. O Allah, make us guided guiders and not misguided misguiders, an ally to Your friends, an enemy to Your enemies. We love due to Your love, those who love You, and hate, due to Your enmity those who oppose You. O Allah, this is the supplication (that we are capable of), and it is upon You to respond, and this is the effort (that we are capable of), and upon You is the reliance. O Allah, appoint a light in my heart for me, and a light in my grave, and light in front of me, and light behind me, and light on my right, and light on my left, and light above me, and light below me, and light in my hearing, and light in my vision, and light in my hair, and light in my skin, and light in my flesh, and light in my blood, and light in my bones. O Allah, magnify for me light, and appoint for me a light. Glory is to the One who wears Glory and grants by it. Glory is to the One for Whom glorification is not fitting except for Him, the Possessor of Honor and Bounties, Glory is to the Possessor of Glory and Generosity, Glory is to the Possessor of Majesty and Honor’

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3419

5.11 Zaid bin Arqam  (رضي الله عنه) reported: I am not going to say anything but only that which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to say. He used to supplicate:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from torment of the grave. O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof. O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded."

(Sahih Muslim 2722

5.12 Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه): "When revelation came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), one could hear what sounded like the drone of bees before his face. One day revelation was coming to him, he faced the Qiblah, raised his hands and said:

'O Allah! Increase us, do not diminish us. Favor us, do not withhold from us, make us pleased and be pleased with us.'

He (ﷺ) said: 'Ten Ayah were revealed to me, whoever abides by them shall enter Paradise (and they are): 'Successful indeed are the believers...' until the completion of ten Ayat (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:1-10)."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3173

5.13 Sahl bin Mu'adh ibn Anas Al-Juhni (رضي الله عنه) narrated from his father that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Whoever gives for the sake of Allah, withholds for the sake of Allah, loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, and marries for the sake of Allah, he has indeed perfected his faith."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 11, Hadith 2521

4. Quran

Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. (20:14)

Allah - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the Best Names. (20:8)

Allah - there is no deity except Him. He will surely assemble you for [account on] the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. (4:87)

Allah - there is no deity except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely. (64:13)

Your god is only Allah, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge. (20:98)

O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you. Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded? (35:3)

And do not invoke with Allah another deity. There is no deity except Him. Everything will be destroyed except His Face. His is the judgement, and to Him you will be returned. (28:88)

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. (2:2553:2)

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. (59:22)

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. (59:23)

He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted? (39:6)

So know, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place. (47:19)

Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (3:18)

That is Allah, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is Disposer of all things. (6:102)

Sufficient for me is Allah ; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne. (9:129)

So exalted is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne. (23:116)

And He is Allah ; there is no deity except Him. To Him is [due all] praise in the first [life] and the Hereafter. And His is the [final] decision, and to Him you will be returned. (28:70)

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. (24:35)

Allah - there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Great Throne. (27:26)

5. Hadith

5.1 Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to say when he was in distress:

"None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Incomparably Great, the Compassionate. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Rubb of the Mighty Throne. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Rubb of the heavens, the Rubb of the earth, and the Rubb of the Honourable Throne."

(Riyad as-Salihin 1502)

5.2 It was narrated that Umm Hani' (رضي الله عنها) said: "The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

'(About saying) La ilaha illah - no deed takes precedence over it and it does not leave any sin'."

(Sunan Ibn Majah 3797)

5.3 Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“The lasting good deeds are: (the saying of) ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, How perfect Allah is and Allah is great and all praise is for Allah, There is no might nor power except with Allah.”

(Bulugh al-Maram Book 16, Hadith 1588)

5.4 Tamim Ad-Dari (رضي الله عنه) narrated that: The Messsenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Whoever says ten times:

‘I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah. Alone, without partner, One Deity, the One, As-Samad, He did not take a wife, nor a child, nor is there anyone like Him’,

Allah will write for him forty million good deeds.”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3473)

5.Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) "Whoever gets up at night and says:

'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. He is the Only One and has no partners . For Him is the Kingdom and all the praises are due for Him. He is Omnipotent. All the praises are for Allah. All the glories are for Allah. And none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, And Allah is Great And there is neither Might nor Power Except with Allah'.

And then says:

'O Allah! Forgive me'.

Or invokes (Allah), he will be responded to and if he performs ablution (and prays), his prayer will be accepted."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1154)

5.6 It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said: "Some poor people came to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah , the rich pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, but they have wealth that they give in charity and with which they free slaves.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

'If you pray and say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Al-Hamdu-Lillah thirty-three times and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times, and La illaha illAllah ten times, then you will catch up with those who went ahead of you and will go ahead of those who come after you."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1353)

5.7 Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) narrated that Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to supplicate thus:

"There is no god but Allah, the One Who conferred upon His armies the Honor of victory and helped His servant rout the clans; there is nothing after that."

(Sahih Muslim 2724)

5.8 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) reported: Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"I have been commanded (by Allah) to fight people until they testify that there is no true god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform Salat and pay Zakat. If they do so, they will have protection of their blood and property from me except when justified by Islam, and then account is left to Allah".

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 390)

5.9 Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who says after the Adhan:

'I testify that there is no true god except Allah Alone; He has no partners and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His slave and Messenger; I am content with Allah as my Rubb, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islam as my Deen,'

his sins will be forgiven."

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 8, Hadith 50)

5.10 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"Iman has over seventy branches - or over sixty branches - the uppermost of which is the declaration: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah'; and the least of which is the removal of harmful object from the road, and modesty is a branch of Iman.".

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 125)

5.11 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"The uttering of the words: "Subhan-Allah (Allah is free from imperfection), Al-Hamdu Lillah (all praise is due to Allah), La ilaha illAllah (there is no true god except Allah) and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)' is dearer to me than anything over which the sun rises."

(Riyad as-Salihin 1409)

5.12 Narrated Mihjan ibn al-Adra' (رضي الله عنه): The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) entered the mosque and saw a man who had finished his prayer, and was reciting the tashahhud saying:

'O Allah, I ask you, O Allah, the One, the eternally besought of all, He begetteth not, nor was He begotten, and there is none comparable unto Him, that you may forgive me my sins, you are Most Forgiving, Merciful.'

He (the Prophet) said: He was forgiven (repeating three times.)

(Sunan Abi Dawud 985)

5.13 Hanzalah bin 'Ali narrated that: Mihjan bin Al-Adra' (رضی الله عنهم) narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) entered the masjid and there was a man who had finished his prayer and he was reciting the tashahhud. He said:

"O Allah, I ask of You, O Allah, as You are the One, the Only, the Self-Sufficient Master, Who begets not nor was He begotten, and there is None equal or comparable to Him, forgive me my sins, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: "He has been forgiven," three times.

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1301)

5.14 Imam Al-Hakim and Allamah Sakhawi (رحمهم الله) have recorded a famous Dua from Imam Jafar As-Sadiq (عليه السلام) as

‘O Allah! Guard me with Your eye [Your exclusive special attention] that never sleeps, protect me with Your unassailable patronage, and forgive me by virtue of Your power over me so that I may not perish. You [alone] are my hope. O my Rabb! Many a bounty You have bestowed upon me for which my gratitude to You was very little. And so many a trial You have tested me with, over which my patience was very little. O the One for whose favour my gratitude was very little, yet [despite that] He did not deprive me! And O the One over whose trial I showed very little patience, yet He did not abandon me! O the one who saw me committing sins, yet He did not disgrace me! O the giver of never-ending favors! And O the possessor of immeasurable bounties! I beseech You to shower blessings [and send Your special mercy] upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his family. It is [only] through You [and Your power alone] that I ward off [and advance] against the enemies and tyrants.

O Allah! Assist me in my Din [religion] through this world [i.e through my worldly abilities/achievements], and in my Hereafter through my piety. Protect me from things that are hidden from me and do not leave me to rely on myself in those things which are before me [i.e take control of all my matters, regardless if I have control and understanding of them or not]. O the One whom sins do not harm [it is irrelevant to You, O Allah, how much we sin as that does not decrease You in Your greatness!] and forgiveness does not cause any loss [Your treasures and forgiveness are infinite]! Grant me what does not cause You any loss [forgiveness], and absolve me of what does not cause You any harm [sins]. Surely You are the greatest most generous giver! I beg You for quick relief, noble [beautiful] patience, abundant sustenance, and safety from all trials. I beg You for complete eternal safety (‘afiyah) and the ability to express gratitude for safety. I beg You for [complete] independence from people. There is no turning [away from sin] or strength [to worship] except through [i.e from the help of] Allah, the Most High, the Great.

O Allah, we place You in front of their necks [i.e we seek Your assistance in repelling our enemies] and seek refuge in You from their evils.’

(Musnadul Firdaws #8317, Al-Mustadrak 2/142)
