Explanation

The One who beckons for our return. The One who repeatedly turns mankind toward repentance. The One who forgives those who return to goodness. The One who restores to grace those who repent. The One who rewards good deeds. The One who forgives those who forgive others.

The One who grants repentance to whoever He willed among His creatures and accepts their repentance.

Quran

فتلقى آدم من ربه كلمات فتاب عليه إنه هو التواب الرحيم

Then Adam (عليه السلام) received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. (2:37)

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا

Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance. (110:3)

غَافِرِ الذَّنبِ وَقَابِلِ التَّوْبِ شَدِيدِ الْعِقَابِ ذِي الطَّوْلِ ۖ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ إِلَيْهِ الْمَصِيرُ

The Forgiver of sin, Acceptor of repentance, Severe in punishment, Owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination. (40:3)

رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَا أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. (2:128)

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذ ظَّلَمُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ جَاءُوكَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا اللَّهَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُوا اللَّهَ تَوَّابًا رَّحِيمًا

And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah . And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful. (4:64)

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ ۖ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا ۚ أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيمٌ

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. (49:12)

وهو الذي يقبل التوبة عن عباده ويعفو عن السيئات ويعلم ما تفعلون

And it is He who accepts repentance from his servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do. (42:25)

وإني لغفار لمن تاب وآمن وعمل صالحا ثم اهتدى

But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance. (20:82)

إنما التوبة على الله للذين يعملون السوء بجهالة ثم يتوبون من قريب فأولئك يتوب الله عليهم وكان الله عليما حكيما

The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. (4:17)

ألم يعلموا أن الله هو يقبل التوبة عن عباده ويأخذ الصدقات وأن الله هو التواب الرحيم

Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities and that it is Allah who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful? (9:104)

ولولا فضل الله عليكم ورحمته وأن الله تواب حكيم

And had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy on you (He would have hastened the punishment upon you)! And that Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, the All-Wise. (24:10)

إن الله يحب التوابين ويحب المتطهرين

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves. (2:222)

إلا من تاب وآمن وعمل عملا صالحا فأولئك يبدل الله سيئاتهم حسنات وكان الله غفورا رحيما

Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. (25:70)

Hadith

1. Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) said: We counted Messenger (ﷺ)'s saying a hundred times during one single sitting:

‏رب اغفر لي، وتب على إنك أنت التواب الرحيم

"My Rubb! Forgive me and pardon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Returning with compassion and Ever Merciful."

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 20, Hadith 4)

2. Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه) said: In one sitting of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), one could count that he said a hundred time, before he would get up:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَىَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الْغَفُورُ

"Verily, You are the Oft-Returning, the Most Forgiving"

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3434)

3. Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه): We did not know what we should say when we sat during prayer. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was taught (by Allah). He then narrated the tradition to the same effect. Sharik reported from Jami', from Abu Wa'il on the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud something similar. He said: He used to teach us also some other words, but he did not teach them as he taught us the tashahhud:

اللَّهُمَّ أَلِّفْ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِنَا وَأَصْلِحْ ذَاتَ بَيْنِنَا وَاهْدِنَا سُبُلَ السَّلاَمِ وَنَجِّنَا مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ وَجَنِّبْنَا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي أَسْمَاعِنَا وَأَبْصَارِنَا وَقُلُوبِنَا وَأَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ وَاجْعَلْنَا شَاكِرِينَ لِنِعْمَتِكَ مُثْنِينَ بِهَا قَابِلِيهَا وَأَتِمَّهَا عَلَيْنَا

"O Allah, join our hearts, mend our social relationship, guide us to the path of peace, bring us from darkness to light, save us from obscenities, outward or inward, and bless our ears, our eyes, our hearts, our wives, our children, and relent toward us; Thou art the Relenting, the Merciful. And make us grateful for Thy blessing and make us praise it while accepting it and give it to us in full."

4. It is related that 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) used to use these supplications a lot:

رَبَّنَا أَصْلِحْ بَيْنَنَا، وَاهْدِنَا سَبِيلَ الإِسْلاَمِ، وَنَجِّنَا مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ، وَاصْرِفْ عَنَّا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهْرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ، وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي أَسْمَاعِنَا وَأَبْصَارِنَا وَقُلُوبِنَا وَأَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا، وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ، وَاجْعَلْنَا شَاكِرِينَ لِنِعْمَتِكَ، مُثْنِينَ بِهَا، قَائِلِينَ بِهَا، وَأَتْمِمْهَا عَلَيْنَا

"Our Lord, make peace between us and guide us on the path of Islam. Save us from the darkness (and bring us) to the light. Remove acts of deviance from us, both open and hidden. Bless us in our ears, our eyes, our hearts, our wives and our children. Turn to us. You are the Ever-Turning, Most Merciful. Make us thankful for Your blessing and make us among those who give praise for it and proclaim it. Perfect it for us."

5. Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) narrated that : Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever performs Wudu, making Wudu well, then says:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

'I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, there are no partners for Him. And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves.'

Then eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, that may enter by whichever of them wishes."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 55)

6. On the authority of Anas (رضي الله عنه), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Allah the Almighty said:

"O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it."

(40 Hadith Qudsi, No. 34)

7. Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Every son of Adam sins, and the best of the sinners are the repentant."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 11, Hadith 2499)

8. Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik: from his father (رضی الله عنهم) who said:

"I did not remain behind from any of the battles the Prophet (ﷺ) fought in, until the battle of Tabuk, except for Badr. And the Prophet (ﷺ) did not scold anyone who remained behind from Badr, because he only went out to look for the caravan. The Quraish came out to help their caravan, so they met without an appointment as Allah the Mighty and Sublime, said. By my life, people consider the most honorable of battles of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to be that of Badr, but I would not have liked to attend it instead of my oath of allegiance on the night of Al-'Aqabah when we took a covenant for Islam. Afterwards, I did not stay behind from the Prophet (ﷺ) until the battle of Tabuk, and it was the last of the battles he fought.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) informed the people of the departure" - and he mentioned the Hadith in its entirety, and said - "So I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he was sitting in the Masjid, surrounded by the Muslims. He was beaming like the moon beams. When he was happy about a matter he would beam. So I came and said in front of him. He said: 'Receive glad tidings - O Ka'b bin Malik - of the best day you have seen since your mother bore you!' So I said: 'O Prophet of Allah! Is it from Allah or from you?' He said: 'From Allah.' Then he recited these Ayat:

لَّقَد تَّابَ اللَّهُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ فِي سَاعَةِ الْعُسْرَةِ مِن بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ يَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٍ مِّنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ بِهِمْ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Allah has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhajireen and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined [to doubt], and then He forgave them. Indeed, He was to them Kind and Merciful. (9:117)

وَعَلَى الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوا أَن لَّا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

And [He also forgave] the three who were left behind [and regretted their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness and their souls confined them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. (9:118)

He said: "And it was about us that (the following) was revealed as well:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true. (9:119)."

He said: "O Prophet of Allah! Part of my repentance is to not say but the truth, and give up all of my wealth as charity for Allah and His Messenger.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Keep some of your wealth for yourself, for indeed that is better for you.' I said: 'So I will keep my share from Al-Khaibar.'" He said: "So after my acceptance of Islam, Allah did not grant me a greater favor than when I and my two companions told the truth to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and we were not among the liars to be ruined like the others were ruined. Indeed I hope that Allah will not test anyone over telling the truth as he tested me. I did not resort to a lie ever since then, and I hope that Allah will protect me regarding what remains to come."

9. Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه) told that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say when making supplication,

رَبِّ أَعِنِّي وَلَا تُعِنْ عَلَيَّ وَانْصُرْنِي وَلَا تَنْصُرْ عَلَيَّ وَامْكُرْ لِي وَلَا تَمْكُرْ عَلَيَّ وَاهْدِنِي وَيَسِّرِ الْهُدَى لِي وَانْصُرْنِي عَلَى مَنْ بَغَى عَلَيَّ ربِّ اجعَلني لكَ شَاكِرًا لَكَ ذَاكِرًا لَكَ رَاهِبًا لَكَ مِطْوَاعًا لَكَ مُخْبِتًا إِلَيْكَ أَوَّاهًا مُنِيبًا رَبِّ تَقَبَّلْ تَوْبَتِي وَاغْسِلْ حَوْبَتِي وَأَجِبْ دَعْوَتِي وَثَبِّتْ حُجَّتِي وَسَدِّدْ لِسَانِي وَاهْدِ قَلْبِي وَاسْلُلْ سَخِيمَةَ صَدْرِي

"My Lord, help me and do not give help against me; grant me victory and do not grant victory over me; plan on my behalf and do not plan against me; guide me and make right guidance easy for me; grant me victory over those who act wrongfully towards me. My Lord, make me grateful to Thee, mindful of Thee, full of fear towards Thee, devoted to Thy obedience, humble before Thee, earnest in supplication, and penitent. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sin, answer my supplication, clearly establish my evidence, make true my tongue, guide my heart, and draw out the malice in my breast."

اللهم فاطر السماوات والأرض عالم الغيب والشهادة، يا ذا الجلال والاكرام إني أعهد إليك في هذه الحياة الدنيا وأشهدك أني أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحدك لا شريك لك، لك الملك ولك الحمد وأنت على كل شئ قدير، وأشهد أن محمدا عبدك ورسولك صلى الله عليه وآله وأشهد أن وعدك حق وأن لقاءك حق، وأن الساعة آتية لا ريب فيها وأنك تبعث من في القبور، وأشهدك أنك إن تكلني إلى نفسي تكلني إلى ضعية وعورة وذنب وخطيئة، وإني لا أثق إلا برحمتك، فاجعل لي عندك عهدا تؤديه إلى يوم ألقاك إنك لا تخلف الميعاد، واغفر لي ذنوبي كلها صغيرها وكبيرها، إنه لا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت، وتب علي إنك أنت التواب الرحيم

اللهم يا الله يا رحمن ... يا تواب ... يا أول يا آخر يا حي يا قيوم يا شامخ يا واسع يا سلام يا رفيع يا مرتفع يا نور. يا ذا الجلال والاكرام يا ذا العزة والسلطان أسئلك أن تصلي على محمد وآل محمد وأن تفرج عني كل هم وغم وكرب أنا فيه، وتقضى جميع حوائجي وتبلغني غاية أملي، وتكبت أعدائي وحسادي وتكفيني أمر كل مؤذ لي سريعا عاجلا إنك على كل شئ قدير

اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد وارزقني إشفاقا من عذابك يتجلى له قلبي وتدمع له عيني ويقشعر له جلدي ويتجافى له جنبي وأجد نفعه في قلبي، اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد وطهر قلبي من النفاق وصدري من الغش و أعمالي كلها من الرياء وعيني من الخيانة ولساني من الكذب وطهر سمعي و بصري وتب علي إنك أنت التواب الرحيم

اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد وكن لي رؤوفا وكن لي رحيما وكن بي حفيا واجعل لي ودا، اللهم اغفر لي يا غفار وتب علي يا تواب

اللهم رب الأرباب، ومسبب الأسباب، ومالك الرقاب، ومسخر السحاب ومسهل الصعاب، يا حليم يا تواب، يا كريم يا وهاب، يا مفتح الأبواب يامن حيث ما دعي أجاب، يامن ليس له حاجب ولا بواب، يامن ليس لخزائنه قفل ولا باب، يامن لا يرخى عليه ستر ولا يضرب من دونه حجاب، يا من يرزق من يشاء بغير حساب، يا غافر الذنب وقابل التوب شديد العقاب، قل هو الله ربي لا إله إلا هو عليه توكلت و إليه متاب

اللهم إني أسألك باسمك: يا تام، يا تواب، يا تالي الأنباء على رسوله. أن تصلي على محمد وآله، وافعل بي وبجميع المؤمنين ما أنت أهله، يا أرحم الراحمين
