Quran

It is that of which Allah gives good tidings to His servants who believe and do righteous deeds. Say, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], "I do not ask you for this message any payment [but] only good will through kinship." And whoever commits a good deed - We will increase for him good therein. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Appreciative. (42:23)

That He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative. (35:30)

If you loan Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative and Forbearing. (64:17)

And they will say, "Praise to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative." (35:34)

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (2:261)

If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]. (14:7)

What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And ever is Allah Appreciative and Knowing. (4:147)

But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer - it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah]. (17:19)

[And it will be said], "Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated." (76:22)

My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants. (27:19)

Work, O family of Dawood (عليه السلام), in gratitude. And few of My servants are grateful. (34:13)

And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude. (25:62)

Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful. (31:31)

O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Nuh (عليه السلام). Indeed, he was a grateful servant.(17:6)

Hadith

1. Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"While a man was walking on his way he became extremely thirsty. He found a well, he went down into it to drink water. Upon leaving it, he saw a dog which was panting out of thirst. His tongue was lolling out and he was eating moist earth from extreme thirst. The man thought to himself: 'This dog is extremely thirsty as I was.' So he descended into the well, filled up his leather sock with water, and holding it in his teeth, climbed up and quenched the thirst of the dog. Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) appreciated his action (فشكر الله له) and forgave his sins". The Companions asked: "Shall we be rewarded for showing kindness to the animals also?" He (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, "A reward is given in connection with every living creature".

In the narration of Al-Bukhari, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) is reported to have said: "Allah forgave him in appreciation of this act and admitted him to Jannah".

Another narration says: "Once a dog was going round the well and was about to die out of thirst. A prostitute of Banu Israel happened to see it. So she took off her leather sock and lowered it into the well. She drew out some water and gave the dog to drink. She was forgiven on account of her action".

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 126)

2. Abu Kabshah Al-Anmari (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

A slave whom Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) provides with wealth and knowledge, so he has Taqwa of his Lord with it, nurtures the ties of kinship with it, and he knows that Allah has a right in it. So this is the most virtuous rank. And a slave whom Allah provides with knowledge, but He does not provide with wealth. So he has a truthful intent, saying: 'If I had wealth, then I would do the deeds of so-and-so with it.' He has his intention, so their rewards are the same.

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2325, Abridged)

3. Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه): Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) Says, 'If My slave intends to do a bad deed then (O Angels) do not write it unless he does it; if he does it, then write it as it is, but if he refrains from doing it for My Sake, then write it as a good deed (in his account). (On the other hand) if he intends to do a good deed, but does not do it, then write a good deed (in his account), and if he does it, then write it for him (in his account) as ten good deeds up to seven-hundred times."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 7501)

4. Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter."

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 9, Hadith 9)

5. ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“A man from my nation will be called before all of creation on the Day of Resurrection, and ninety-nine scrolls will be spread out for him, each one extending as far as the eye can see. Then Allah will say: “Do you deny anything of this?” He will say: “No, O Lord.” He will say: “Have My recording scribes been unfair to you?” Then He will say: “Apart from that, do you have any good deeds?” The man will be terrified and will say: “No.” [Allah (سبحانه و تعالى)] will say: “Indeed, you have good deeds with Us, and you will not be treated unjustly this Day.” Then a card will be brought out on which is written

(I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).

He will say: “O Lord, what is this card compared with these scrolls?” He will say: “You will not be treated unjustly.” Then the scrolls will be placed in one side of the Balance and the card in the other. The scrolls will go up (i.e., be light) and the card will go down (i.e., will weigh heavily).”

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 5, Book 37, Hadith 4300)

6. Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) reported: Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

"There was a man from among a nation before you who killed ninety-nine people and then made an inquiry about the most learned person on the earth. He was directed to a monk. He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the negative and the man killed him also completing one hundred. He then asked about the most learned man in the earth. He was directed to a scholar. He told him that he had killed one hundred people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the affirmative and asked, 'Who stands between you and repentance? Go to such and such land; there (you will find) people devoted to prayer and worship of Allah, join them in worship, and do not come back to your land because it is an evil place.' So he went away and hardly had he covered half the distance when death overtook him; and there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of torment. The angels of mercy pleaded, 'This man has come with a repenting heart to Allah,' and the angels of punishment argued, 'He never did a virtuous deed in his life.'

Then there appeared another angel in the form of a human being and the contending angels agreed to make him arbiter between them. He said, 'Measure the distance between the two lands. He will be considered belonging to the land to which he is nearer.' They measured and found him closer to the land (land of piety) where he intended to go, and so the angels of mercy collected his soul".

In another version: "He was found to be nearer to the locality of the pious by a cubit and was thus included among them". Another version says: "Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) commanded (the land which he wanted to leave) to move away and commanded the other land (his destination) to draw nearer and then He said: "Now measure the distance between them.' It was found that he was nearer to his goal by a hand's span and was thus forgiven". It is also narrated that he drew closer by a slight movement on his chest.

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 20)

7.
Narrated `Abdullah (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"I know the person who will be the last to come out of the (Hell) Fire, and the last to enter Paradise. He will be a man who will come out of the (Hell) Fire crawling, and Allah will say to him, 'Go and enter Paradise.' He will go to it, but he will imagine that it had been filled, and then he will return and say, 'O Lord, I have found it full.' Allah will say, 'Go and enter Paradise, and you will have what equals the world and ten times as much (or, you will have as much as ten times the like of the world).' On that, the man will say, 'Do you mock at me (or laugh at me) though You are the King?"

I saw Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) (while saying that) smiling that his premolar teeth became visible. It is said that will be the lowest in degree amongst the people of Paradise.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6571)

8. Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported:

While a person was in the wilderness he heard a voice from the cloud (commanding it thus): Irrigate the garden of so and so. (After that the clouds slinked aside and poured water on a stony ground. It filled a channel amongst the channels of that land and that person followed that water and he found a person standing in the garden busy in changing the course of water with the help of a hatchet.

He said to him: Servant of Allah, what is your name? he said: So and so. And it was that very name which he had heard from the clouds. and he said to him: Servant of Allah, why do you ask me my name? He said: I heard a voice from the clouds of which is the downpour, saying: Water the garden of so and so, like your name. What do you do (for the favour) shown to you by Allah in this matter?

He said: Now as you state so. I look what yield I get from it, and I give one-third as charity out of it and I and my children eat one-third of it and one-third I return to it as investment.

9. Ibn `Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said: “The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to supplicate, saying:

“My Lord, aid me and do not aid against me, and grant me victory and do not grant victory over me, plot for me and do not plot against me, guide me and facilitate guidance for me, grant me victory over those who transgress against me. My Lord, make me ever-grateful to You, ever-remembering of You, ever-fearful of You, ever-obedient to You, ever-humble to You, oft-turning and returning to You. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash my sin, answer my call, make firm my proof, make firm my tongue, guide my heart, and remove the treachery of my chest.”

9. Narrated Al-Mughira (رضي الله عنه) : The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to offer night prayers till his feet became swollen. Somebody said, to him, "Allah has forgiven you, your faults of the past and those to follow." On that, he said,

"Shouldn't I be a thankful slave of Allah?"

10. Mu'adh ibn Jabal (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) caught his hand and said: By Allah, I love you, Mu'adh. I give some instruction to you. Never leave to recite this supplication after every (prescribed) prayer:

"O Allah, help me in remembering You, in giving You thanks, and worshipping You well."

11. It was narrated from Shadad bin Aws (رضي الله عنه) that: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to say in his prayer:

"O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all my affairs and determination in following the right path, I ask You to make me thankful for Your blessings and to make me worship You properly. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I ask You for the best of what You know and I seek refuge in You from the worst of what You know and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know."

12. Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying:

"While a person was going along the path he found a thorny branch upon it. He pushed it to a side and Allah approved (this action) of his and (as a mark of appreciation) granted him pardon."

13. Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"I saw a man going about in Jannah (and enjoying himself) as a reward for cutting from the middle of the road, a tree which was causing inconvenience to the Muslims".

14. Narrated Abdullah ibn Ghannam (رضي الله عنه) : The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)said: If anyone says in the morning:

"O Allah! whatever favour has come to me, it comes from Thee alone Who has no partner. to Thee praise is due and thanksgiving,"

he will have expressed full thanksgiving for the day; and if anyone says the same in the evening, he will have expressed full thanksgiving for the night.
