Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded. (16:90)

And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6:115)

Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing. (4:58)

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do. (5:8)

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted. (4:135)

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. (60:8)

We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. (57:25)

And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allah fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember. (6:152)

And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]. (4:3)

So to that [religion of Allah] invite, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], and remain on a right course as you are commanded and do not follow their inclinations but say, "I have believed in what Allah has revealed of the Qur'an, and I have been commanded to do justice among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. (42:15)

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allah has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate. (4:105)

[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. (5:42)

5. Hadith

5.1
Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet  (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"The best type of Jihad (striving in the way of Allah) is speaking a true word in the presence of a tyrant ruler."

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 194)

5.2 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"Seven are (the persons) whom Allah will give Shade of His Thrown on the Day when there would be no shade other than His Throne's Shade:

i) A just ruler;
ii) a youth who grew up worshipping Allah;
iii) a man whose heart is attached to mosques;
iv) two persons who love and meet each other and depart from each other for the sake of Allah;
v) a man whom an extremely beautiful woman seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying): 'I fear Allah';
vi) a man who gives in charity and conceals it (to such an extent) that the left hand does not know what the right has given; and
vii) a person who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes well up".

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 376)

5.3 Khaalid ibn Al-Waleed (رضي الله عنه), narrated: A man came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and among the things he asked was: I want to be the most just of people. The Prophet said:

“Love for people what you love for yourself; you will be the most just of people.”

(Kanz al-‘Ummaal,16/127)

5.4 It was narrated from Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه) that: "The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

'None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother or he said for his neighbor, what he loves for himself'."

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 66)

5.5  It has been narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

Behold! the Dispensers of justice will be seated on the pulpits of light beside God, on the right side of the Merciful, Exalted and Glorious. Either side of the Being is the right side both being equally meritorious. (The Dispensers of justice are) those who do justice in their rules, in matters relating to their families and in all that they undertake to do.

(Sahih Muslim 1827)

5.6 Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

The Mahdi will be of my stock, and will have a broad forehead a prominent nose. He will fill the earth will equity and justice as it was filled with oppression and tyranny, and he will rule for seven years.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4285)

5.7 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه): Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"There is a Sadaqa to be given for every joint of the human body; and for every day on which the sun rises there is a reward of a Sadaqa (i.e. charitable gift) for the one who establishes justice among people."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2707)

5.8 Narrated Abu Sa`id (رضي الله عنه): Something was sent to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and he distributed it amongst four (men) and said,

"I want to attract their hearts,(to Islam thereby)," A man said [to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)], "You have not done justice." Thereupon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, "There will emerge from the offspring of this (man) some people who will renounce the religion."

 (Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 189)

5.9 Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

If only one day of this time (world) remained, Allah would raise up a man from my family who would fill this earth with justice as it has been filled with oppression.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4283)

5.10 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه): Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"Allah's Hand is full, and (its fullness) is not affected by the continuous spending, day and night." He also said, "Do you see what He has spent since He created the Heavens and the Earth? Yet all that has not decreased what is in His Hand." He also said, "His Throne is over the water and in His other Hand is the balance (of Justice) and He raises and lowers (whomever He will)."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 7411)

5.11 'Abdullah bin Mawhab narrated that 'Uthman said to Ibn 'Umar (رضی الله عنهم): "Go and judge between the people." So he said: "Perhaps you can excuse me (from that) O Commander of the Believers!" He said: "Why do you have an aversion for that when your father judged?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) saying:

'Whoever was a judge and judged with justice, it still would have been better for him to have turned away from it completely.'

What do I want after that?'"

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1322)

5.12 It was narrated that 'Ubadah bin As-Samit (رضي الله عنه) said:

"We pledged to the Messenger of Allah to hear and obey during our hardship and our ease, when we felt energetic and when we felt tired, that we would not contend with the orders of whomever was entrusted with it, that we would stand for justice wherever we may be, and that we would not fear the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 4153)

5.13 Narrated Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, "There is no god but Allah" and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). The tyranny of any tyrant and the justice of any just (ruler) will not invalidate it. One must have faith in Divine decree.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 2532)

5.14 It was narrated from 'Iyad bin Himar (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Whoever finds lost property, let him ask one or two men of good character to witness it, then he should not alter it nor conceal it. If its owner comes along, then he has more right to it, otherwise it belongs to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), Who gives it to whomsoever He wills.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 3, Book 18, Hadith 2505)

5.15 Yazid bin ‘Umairah, who was one of the companions of Mu’adh bin Jabal (رضی الله عنهم) said:

Whenever he (Mu’adh bin Jabal) sat in a meeting for preaching, he would say: Allah is a just arbiter; those who doubt would perish.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4611)

5.16 Silah reported: ‘Ammar ibn Yasir (رضی الله عنهم) said,

“Whoever has three qualities has completed the faith: a sense of fairness in yourself, spending in charity despite difficult circumstances, and offering peace to the world.”

(Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah 30440)

5.17 Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“No man is appointed as leader for more than ten days but that he will be brought on the Day of Resurrection with his hands shackled to his neck, until judgment is issued between him and them.”

(Al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ 288)

5.18 Hudhaifah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

"Do not let yourselves be 'yes-men', saying: 'If the people are good then we will be good, and if they are wrong then we will be wrong.'Rather, make up your own minds, if the people are good then you are good, and if they are evil, then do not behave unjustly."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2007)

5.19 Narrated Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

If anyone seeks the office of judge among Muslims till he gets it and his justice prevails over his tyranny, he will go to Paradise; but the man whose tyranny prevails over his justice will go to Hell.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 3575)

5.20 Abu Dharr (رضي الله عنه) reported Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said:

"O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another."

"...O My servants, it is but your deeds that I record for you and then recompense you for. So let him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself."

(Sahih Muslim 2577 a)

5.21 Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"Fear injustice. Injustice will appear as darkness on the Day of Rising. Fear avarice. Avarice destroyed people before you and led them to shed one another's blood and to make lawful what was unlawful for them."

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 483)

5.22 'Aishah (رضي الله عنها) reported: The Quraish were much worried about the case of a Makhzumiyah woman who had committed theft and wondered who should intercede for her with Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) (so that she would not get punished for her crime). Some said Usamah bin Zaid (رضي الله عنه) was his beloved and so he may dare do so. So Usamah spoke to him about that matter and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to him,

"Do you intercede when one of the legal punishments ordained by Allah has been voilated?"

Then he got up and addressed the people saying,

"The people before you were ruined because when a noble person amongst them committed theft, they would leave him, but if a weak person amongst them committed theft, they would execute the legal punishment on him. By Allah, were Fatimah (عليه السلام), the daughter of Muhammad, to commit the theft, I would have cut off her hand."

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 651)
