And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'" (10:106)

They call besides Allah what can neither harm nor benefit them. That is truly the farthest one can stray. (22:12)

Say, "Do you worship besides Allah that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is Allah who is the Hearing, the Knowing?" (5:76)

He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? (21:166)

But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection. (25:3)

But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan]. (25:55)

Say, "Shall we invoke instead of Allah that which neither benefits us nor harms us and be turned back on our heels after Allah has guided us? [We would then be] like one whom the devils enticed [to wander] upon the earth confused, [while] he has companions inviting him to guidance, [calling], 'Come to us.' " Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance; and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds. (6:71)

Say, "I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe." (7:188)

Say, "I possess not for myself any harm or benefit except what Allah should will. For every nation is a [specified] term. When their time has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]." (10:49)

What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness. (4:79)

Then when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord. (16:54)

Do they not see that Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed, in that are signs for a people who believe. (30:37)

And when We let the people taste mercy, they rejoice therein, but if evil afflicts them for what their hands have put forth, immediately they despair. (30:36)

O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah ; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (5:54)

But today you do not hold for one another [the power of] benefit or harm, and We will say to those who wronged, "Taste the punishment of the Fire, which you used to deny." (34:42)

Hadith

1. It was narrated from Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) that when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) performed the Subh (morning prayer), while he said the Salam, he would say:

‘O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision and acceptable deeds.’

2. It was narrated from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

"Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge with Allah from knowledge that is of no benefit."

3. Narrated 'Aishah (رضي الله عنه): When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) saw rain he said,

4. Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

"When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)."

5. Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to say,

“O Allah! Grant me benefit in what you have taught me, and teach me useful knowledge and provide me with knowledge that will benefit me.”

6. Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) told that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

'O Allah, I seek refuge with You from four things: From knowledge that is of no benefit, from a heart that does not fear (You), from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not heard.'

7. Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrated: "I was behind the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) one day when he said:

'O boy! I will teach you a statement: Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aid. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you- you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you. And if they were to gather to do something to harm you- you would never be harmed except that Allah had written for you. The pens are lifted and the pages are dried.'"

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 11, Hadith 2516)

8. It was narrated that Abu Barzah Al-Aslami (رضي الله عنه) said: "O Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)! Tell me of an action by which I may benefit.' He said:

(Sunan Ibn Majah 3681)

9. Narrated Qays ibn Bishr at-Taghlibi: Abu-ad-Darda' said to Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (رضی اللہ عنهم): (Tell us) a word which benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to us:

One who spends on (the maintenance of) horses (for Jihad) is like the one who spreads his hand to give alms (Sadaqah) and does not withhold it.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4089, Abridged)

10. Narrated Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه): "When (the following) was revealed:

'And warn your tribe of near kindred (26:214)'

the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) gathered the (families) of the Quraish (calling them) one and all, he said:

'O people of the Quraish! Ransom yourselves from the Fire! I have no power to prevent harm or bring benefit to you before Allah! O people of Banu 'Abd Manaf! Ransom yourselves from the Fire! I have no power to prevent harm or bring benefit to you before Allah! O people of Banu Qusayy! Ransom yourselves from the Fire! I have no power to prevent harm or bring benefit to you! O people of Banu 'Abdul-Muttalib! Ransom yourselves from the Fire! I have no power to prevent harm or bring benefit to you! O Fatimah bint Muhammad (رضي الله عنها)! Ransom yourself from the Fire! I have no power to prevent harm or bring benefit to you before Allah! All you have is the womb, and the kind relations that shall come of it."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3185)
