5. Hadith
5.1 Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) drew a square and then drew a line in the middle of it and let it extend outside the square and then drew several small lines attached to that central line, and said,
"This is the human being, and this, (the square) in his lease of life, encircles him from all sides (or has encircled him), and this (line), which is outside (the square), is his hope, and these small lines are the calamities and troubles (which may befall him), and if one misses him, an-other will snap (i.e. overtake) him, and if the other misses him, a third will snap (i.e. overtake) him."
5.2 Narrated Mujahid that Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهم) said: "Do you know what is the width of Jahannam?" I said: "No." He said: "Yes, and by Allah I do not know. 'Aishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated to me that she asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) about Allah's saying:
'They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him (39:67).'
She said: 'I said "Where will the people be on that day O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Upon the bridge over Jahannam."
5.3 It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:
“Be moderate and adhere to moderation, for there is no one among you who will be saved by his deeds.”
They said: “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:
“Not even me. Unless Allah encompasses me with mercy and grace from Him.”
5.4 Al-Agharr Abu Muslim narrated that: He bears witness, from Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنهم), that they bear witness, from the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), that he said:
“There is no group that remembers Allah, except that the angels encompass them, mercy covers them, and tranquility descends upon them: and Allah remembers (mentions) them before those who are with Him.”
5.5 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه), who said that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:
When Allah created Paradise and Hell-fire, He sent Gabriel to Paradise, saying: Look at it and at what I have prepared therein for its inhabitants. So he came to it and looked at it and at what Allah had prepared therein for its inhabitants. So he returned to Him and said: By your glory, no one hears of it without entering it. So He ordered that it be encompassed by forms of hardship, and He said: Return to it and look at what I have prepared therein for its inhabitants. So he returned to it and found that it was encompassed by forms of hardship. Then he returned to Him and said: By Your glory, I fear that no one will enter it.
He said: Go to Hell-fire and look at it and what I have prepared therein for its inhabitants, and he found that it was in layers, one above the other. Then he returned to Him and said: By Your glory, no one who hears of it will enter it. So He ordered that it be encompassed by lusts. Then He said: Return to it. And he returned to it and said: By Your glory, I am frightened that no one will escape from entering it.
5.6 Yazid bin Salamah Al-Ju'fi (رضي الله عنه) said: "O Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)! I heard so many narrations from you that I am afraid the last of them will cause me to forget the first of them. So narrate a statement to me that will encompass them." So he said:
"Have Taqwa of Allah with what you learn."
5.7 It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin ‘As (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:
“When the fasting person breaks his fast, his supplication is not turned back.”
(One of the narrators) Ibn Abi Mulaikah said: "When he broke his fast, I heard 'Abdullah bin 'Amr say:
'O Allah! I ask You by Your mercy, which encompasses all things, to forgive me.'"
5.8 Abu Sa'eed (رضي الله عنه) narrated: "Some persons from the Ansar asked for (something) from the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and he gave them. They again asked him for (something), and he gave them. Then he said:
"Whatever of good that I have, I would never hoard it from any of you. (Remember) whoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him content, and whoever tries to make due, Allah will suffice him. And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and more encompassing than patience."
5.9 It was narrated from Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut’im that his father (رضي الله عنهم) said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) stood up in Khaif in Mina, and said:
‘May Allah make his face shine, the man who hears my words and conveys them. It may be that the bearer of knowledge does not understand it, and it may be that he takes it to one who will understand it more than he does. There are three things in which the heart of the believer does not betray: sincerity of action for the sake of Allah, offering sincere advice to the rulers of the Muslims, and adhering to the Jama’ah (main body of the Muslims). Their supplication is answered (i.e. encompassing every good, and all of the people).”
5.10 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,
"Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those (the angels) in His proximity."
5.11 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said.
"The (Hell) Fire is surrounded with all kinds of desires and passions, while Jannah is surrounded with adversities."
5.12 Mutarrif bin 'Abdullah bin Ash-Shikh-khir narrated from his father (رضي الله عنهم), from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), who said:
"Ibn Adam was fashioned with ninety-nine calamities surrounding him, if the calamities miss him, he is stricken by decrepitude until he dies."
5.13 Abdul Hamid, a client of Banu Hashim, said that his mother who served some of the daughters of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) told him that one of the daughters of the Prophet (رضي الله عنها) said that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to teach her saying: "Say in the morning:
'Glory be to Allah, and I begin with praise of Him; there is no power but in Allah; what Allah wills comes to pass and what He does not will does not come to pass; I know that Allah is Omnipotent and that Allah has comprehended everything in knowledge';
for whoever says it in the morning will be guarded till the evening, and whoever says it in the evening will be guarded till the morning."
