3. Explanation

The One who makes ample and plentiful all that is needed. The One who expands and amplifies all abundance. The One who makes the way wide and open. The One who stretches out a helping hand to mankind. The One whose open hand releases joy, comfort and abundance. The One who infuses the soul into body. The One who has filled the heart with spiritual abundance. The One whose glory and abundance fill and expand the heart.

4. Quran

مَّن ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned. (2:245)

ۚوَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ يَدُ اللَّهِ مَغْلُولَةٌ ۚ غُلَّتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَلُعِنُوا بِمَا قَالُوا ۘ بَلْ يَدَاهُ مَبْسُوطَتَانِ يُنفِقُ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ

And the Jews say, "The hand of Allah is chained." Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. (5:64)

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا

And Allah has made for you the earth an expanse. (71:19)

اللَّهُ الَّذِي يُرْسِلُ الرِّيَاحَ فَتُثِيرُ سَحَابًا فَيَبْسُطُهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ وَيَجْعَلُهُ كِسَفًا فَتَرَى الْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَالِهِ ۖ فَإِذَا أَصَابَ بِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds and spread them in the sky however He wills, and He makes them fragments so you see the rain emerge from within them. And when He causes it to fall upon whom He wills of His servants, immediately they rejoice. (30:48)

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ بَعَثَ لَكُمْ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا ۚ قَالُوا أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِالْمُلْكِ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يُؤْتَ سَعَةً مِّنَ الْمَالِ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَزَادَهُ بَسْطَةً فِي الْعِلْمِ وَالْجِسْمِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ يُؤْتِي مُلْكَهُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, Allah has sent to you Saul as a king." They said, "How can he have kingship over us while we are more worthy of kingship than him and he has not been given any measure of wealth?" He said, "Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing [in favor] and Knowing." (2:247)

اللَّهُ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَيَقْدِرُ ۚ وَفَرِحُوا بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا مَتَاعٌ

Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment. (13:26)

وَلَوْ بَسَطَ اللَّهُ الرِّزْقَ لِعِبَادِهِ لَبَغَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَٰكِن يُنَزِّلُ بِقَدَرٍ مَّا يَشَاءُ ۚ إِنَّهُ بِعِبَادِهِ خَبِيرٌ بَصِيرٌ

And if Allah had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills. Indeed He is, of His servants, Acquainted and Seeing. (42:27)

لَهُ دَعْوَةُ الْحَقِّ ۖ وَالَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ لَا يَسْتَجِيبُونَ لَهُم بِشَيْءٍ إِلَّا كَبَاسِطِ كَفَّيْهِ إِلَى الْمَاءِ لِيَبْلُغَ فَاهُ وَمَا هُوَ بِبَالِغِهِ ۚ وَمَا دُعَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍ

To Him [alone] is the supplication of truth. And those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them with a thing, except as one who stretches his hands toward water [from afar, calling it] to reach his mouth, but it will not reach it [thus]. And the supplication of the disbelievers is not but in error [i.e. futility]. (13:14)

لَئِن بَسَطتَ إِلَيَّ يَدَكَ لِتَقْتُلَنِي مَا أَنَا بِبَاسِطٍ يَدِيَ إِلَيْكَ لِأَقْتُلَكَ ۖ إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِي

If you should raise your hand against me to kill me - I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds. (5:28)

5. Hadith

5.1 Narrated Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه): Allah 's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُبْسَطَ لَهُ فِي رِزْقِهِ، وَيُنْسَأَ لَهُ فِي أَثَرِهِ، فَلْيَصِلْ رَحِمَهُ

"Whoever loves that he be granted more wealth and that his lease of life be prolonged then he should keep good relations with his Kith and kin."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5986)

5.2 Narrated Anas (رضي الله عنه): "Prices became excessive during the time of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), so they said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Set prices for us!' So he said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْمُسَعِّرُ الْقَابِضُ الْبَاسِطُ الرَّزَّاقُ وَإِنِّي لأَرْجُو أَنْ أَلْقَى رَبِّي وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ يَطْلُبُنِي بِمَظْلَمَةٍ فِي دَمٍ وَلاَ مَالٍ

'Indeed Allah is Al-Musa'ir, Al-Qabid, Al-Basir, Ar-Razzaq. And I am hopeful that I meet my Lord and none of you are seeking (recompense from) me for an injustice involving blood or wealth'."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1314)

5.4 Rifa'a az-Zurqi (رضي الله عنه) said, "In the Battle of Uhud when the idolaters retreated, the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

اسْتَوُوا حَتَّى أُثْنِيَ عَلَى رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

'Form straight ranks so that I can praise my Almighty Lord.'

They formed in ranks behind him. He said,

اللَّهُمَّ لاَ قَابِضَ لِمَا بَسَطْتَ، وَلاَ مُقَرِّبَ لِمَا بَاعَدْتَ، وَلاَ مُبَاعِدَ لِمَا قَرَّبْتَ، وَلاَ مُعْطِيَ لِمَا مَنَعْتَ، وَلاَ مَانِعَ لِمَا أَعْطَيْتَ‏.‏ اللَّهُمَّ ابْسُطْ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ وَفَضْلِكَ وَرِزْقِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ النَّعِيمَ الْمُقِيمَ الَّذِي لاَ يَحُولُ وَلاَ يَزُولُ‏.‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ النَّعِيمَ يَوْمَ الْعَيْلَةِ، وَالأَمْنَ يَوْمَ الْحَرْبِ، اللَّهُمَّ عَائِذًا بِكَ مِنْ سُوءِ مَا أَعْطَيْتَنَا، وَشَرِّ مَا مَنَعْتَ مِنَّا‏.‏ اللَّهُمَّ حَبِّبْ إِلَيْنَا الإِيمَانَ وَزَيِّنْهُ فِي قُلُوبِنَا، وَكَرِّهْ إِلَيْنَا الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الرَّاشِدِينَ‏.‏ اللَّهُمَّ تَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَحْيِنَا مُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَلْحِقْنَا بِالصَّالِحِينَ، غَيْرَ خَزَايَا وَلاَ مَفْتُونِينَ‏.‏ اللَّهُمَّ قَاتِلِ الْكَفَرَةَ الَّذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَنْ سَبِيلِكَ، وَيُكَذِّبُونَ رُسُلَكَ، وَاجْعَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ رِجْزَكَ وَعَذَابَكَ‏.‏ اللَّهُمَّ قَاتِلِ الْكَفَرَةَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ، إِلَهَ الْحَقِّ‏

'O Allah, all praise is due to You. O Allah, none can contract what You expand nor bring near what you put far away. None can put far away what You bring near. None can give what You withhold nor withhold what You give. O Allah, expand to us some of Your blessings, mercy and favour and give us provision! O Allah, I ask You for the abiding blessing which is neither changed nor removed. O Allah, I ask You for blessing on the Day of Utter Poverty and security on the Day of Fear. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what You give us. O Allah, make us love belief and adorn our hearts with it. Make us hate disbelief, deviance and rebellion. Place us among the rightly-guided. O Allah, make us die Muslims and make us live as Muslims and join us to the rightly acting, who are neither disappointed nor afflicted. O Allah, fight the unbelievers who bar your path and who deny Your Messengers. Place You abasement and punishment over them. O Allah, fight the unbelievers who were given the Book, O Lord of Truth'!"

5.5 Abu ad-Darda' said to the father of Qays ibn Bishr at-Taghlibi (رضی الله عنهم): (Tell us) a word which benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to us:

الْمُنْفِقُ عَلَى الْخَيْلِ كَالْبَاسِطِ يَدَهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ لاَ يَقْبِضُهَا

'One who spends on (the maintenance of) horses (for jihad) is like the one who spreads his hand to give alms (sadaqah) and does not withhold it.'

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4089)

5.6 Narrated Zaid bin Thabit (رضي الله عنه): "We were with the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) collecting the Qur'an on pieces of cloth, so the Messenger of Allah said: 'Tuba (blessedness) is for Ash-Sham.' So we said: 'Why is that O Messenger of Allah?' He said:

‏ لأَنَّ مَلاَئِكَةَ الرَّحْمَنِ بَاسِطَةٌ أَجْنِحَتَهَا عَلَيْهَا

'Because the angels of Ar-Rahman spread their wings over it'."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 1, Book 46, Hadith 3954)

5.7 Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

إن الله تعالى يبسط يده بالليل ليتوب مسيء النهار، ويبسط يده بالنهار ليتوب مسيء الليل حتى تطلع الشمس من مغربها

"Allah, the Exalted, will continue to stretch out His Hand in the night so that the sinners of the day may repent, and continue to stretch His Hand in the daytime so that the sinners of the night may repent, until the sun rises from the west".

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 16)

5.8 It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say on the pulpit:

يَأْخُذُ الْجَبَّارُ سَمَوَاتِهِ وَأَرَضِيهِ بِيَدِهِ - وَقَبَضَ يَدَهُ فَجَعَلَ يَقْبِضُهَا وَيَبْسُطُهَا - ثُمَّ يَقُولُ أَنَا الْجَبَّارُ أَنَا الْمَلِكُ أَيْنَ الْجَبَّارُونَ أَيْنَ الْمُتَكَبِّرُونَ

"The Compeller (Al-Jabbar) will seize His heavens and His earths in His Hand" – and he clenched his hand and started to open and close it – "Then He will say: 'I am the Compeller, I am the King. Where are the tyrants? Where are the arrogant?"'

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 5, Book 37, Hadith 4275)

5.9 Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying:

يَنْزِلُ اللَّهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا لِشَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ لِثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرِ فَيَقُولُ مَنْ يَدْعُونِي فَأَسْتَجِيبَ لَهُ أَوْ يَسْأَلُنِي فَأُعْطِيَهُ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ مَنْ يُقْرِضُ غَيْرَ عَدِيمٍ وَلاَ ظَلُومٍ

'Allah descends to the lowest heaven at half of the night or at one-third of the latter part and says: Who is there to supplicate Me so that I answer him? Who is there to ask Me so that I grant him? And then says: Who will lend to One Who is neither indigent nor tyrant?'

(This hadith has been narrated by Sa'd b. Sa'id (رضي الله عنه) with the same chain of transmitters with this addition:

ثُمَّ يَبْسُطُ يَدَيْهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَقُولُ مَنْ يُقْرِضُ غَيْرَ عَدُومٍ وَلاَ ظَلُومٍ

'Then the Blessed and the Exalted (Lord) stretches His Hands and says: Who will lend to One Who is neither indigent nor tyrant?' )

(Sahih Muslim 758 d)

5.10 Al-A'raj reported that he heard Abu Huraira (رضی الله عنهم) as saying: You are under the impression that Abu Huraira transmits so many Ahadith from Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم); (bear in mind) Allah is the great Reckoner. I was a poor man and I served Allah's Messenger being satisfied with bare subsistence, whereas the immigrants remained busy with transactions in the bazar; while the Ansar had been engaged in looking after their properties. (He further reported) that Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

مَنْ يَبْسُطُ ثَوْبَهُ فَلَنْ يَنْسَى شَيْئًا سَمِعَهُ مِنِّ

'He who spreads the cloth would not forget anything that he would hear from me.'

I spread my cloth until he narrated something. I then pressed it against my (chest), so I never forgot anything that I heard from him.

يا باسط اليدين بالرحمة، ارحمني

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، يا من أظهر الجميل وستر القبيح ولم يهتك الستر عني، يا كريم العفو يا حسن التجاوز يا واسع المغفرة، يا باسط اليدين بالرحمة يا صاحب كل نجوى ويا منتهى كل شكوى، يا كريم الصفح، يا عظيم المن يا مبتدءا كل نعمة قبل استحقاقها، يا رباه يا سيداه يا مولاه يا غياثاه صل على محمد وآل محمد وأسألك أن لا تجعلني في النار

يا قابض كل شئ وباسطه لا قابض ولا باسط إلا هو

اللهم لا قابض لما بسطت، ولا باسط لما قبضت

يا من هو باسط السماوات والأرض يا الله

يا عظيم الأسماء، يا باسط الأرض، ويا رافع السماء

اللهم يا الله يا رب، يا رحمن يا رحيم ... يا باسط ... يا حنان يا منان يا قديم الاحسان أسئلك بحق هذه الأسماء وبحق أسمائك كلها ما علمت منها وما لم أعلم أن تصلي على محمد نبيك ورسولك وخيرتك من خلقك وعلى آل محمد الطيبين الأخيار الطاهرين الأبرار، وأن تفرج عني كل غم وهم وكرب وضر وضيق أنا فيه وتوسع علي في رزقي أبدا ما أحييتني وتبلغني أملي سريعا عاجلا وتكبت أعدائي وحسادي وذوي التعزز على والظلم لي والتعدي على وتنصرني عليهم برحمتك وتكفيني أمرهم بعزتك وتجعلني الظاهر عليهم بقدرتك وغالب مشيتك يا أرحم الراحمين آمين رب العالمين، وصلى الله وملائكته وأنبياؤه ورسله والصالحون من عباده، على محمد خاتم النبيين وعلى أهل بيته الطيبين الطاهرين وسلم تسليما كثيرا، وحسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل

يأمن أظهر الجميل، وستر القبيح، يا من لم يؤاخذ بالجريرة، ولم يهتك الستر، يا عظيم العفو، يا حسن التجاوز، يا واسع المغفرة، يا باسط اليدين بالرحمة، يا صاحب كل نجوى ومنتهى كل شكوى، يا كريم الصفح، يا عظيم المن، يا مبتدئا بالنعم قبل استحقاقها، يا ربنا وسيدنا ويا مولانا، ويا غاية رغبتنا، أسئلك يا الله أن لا تشوه خلقي بالنار

اللهم يا باسط الأرض وناصب الجبال؛ ويا مُنزل الغيث ومُجرى الأنهار؛ ويا مُطعم الجنين في ظلمة الأرحام ورازق الطير في الأوكار؛ أجعل القارى هذه الرسالة دعوة لا ترد ورزقاً لا يُعد؛ وأفتح له باباً إلى الجنة لا يُسد
